A true legend in the media world, Donnie Simpson calls WPGC home every morning, serving up a warm blend of humor, celebrity guests, unique perspective on the day’s headlines, up-to-the-minute news and the hottest music in the country.
Donnie began his radio career at WJLB in Detroit, at the age of 15!! After 8 successful years at JLB, Donnie moved to Washington, DC to join WKYS where he hosted the morning show and served as Program Director for 15 years. On March 11, 1993, Donnie joined WPGC-FM.
In 1981, Donnie’s television career began as he served as George Michael's back-up sports anchor for WRC-TV (NBC's Washington affiliate). In 1983, he joined BET as host of Video Soul, where he broke new ground as one of the nations first "VJ's”. Donnie presented a wide array of music videos and conducted hundreds of memorable live interviews on BET for 14 years.
Donnie's following at BET led to appearances in motion pictures including 1983's Hip Hop classic, Krush Groove, Disorderlies in 1987, and Robert Townsend's film The Five Heartbeats in 1991. Donnie has also appeared on popular sitcoms, Martin and The Jamie Foxx Show as well as guesting on The Jenny Jones Show and The Arsenio Hall Show. His attraction on a national level has maintained over time as he has returned to BET for the past two years, to host their annual Walk of Fame celebration and telecast.
An active community volunteer, Donnie has served as Honorary Chairman of the National Black Family Reunion and has assisted in fundraising efforts for the United Negro College Fund and AIDS research. In addition, Donnie and his wife, Pam, have established The Donnie & Pam Simpson Scholarship Fund, to insure that minority students in need of assistance get the opportunity they deserve.
Donnie is celebrating 30 years of excellence in radio here in Washington, DC and his consistent ratings success and reputation have earned him “legendary” status among his peers and loyal listeners. He is high atop the list of numerous national networks and publications to comment as an expert on current top music and entertainment topics, and has picked up many awards along the way including Billboards "Program Director of the Year", "Billboards "1998 Air Personality of the Year," Black Radio Exclusive’s "Drummer Award" and is nominated for the National Radio Hall of Fame this year! |
