Dear Justine,
Thanks for your insight in advance. I am currently a resident at one of the teaching hospitals in the area. I am in a strange situation. One of my colleagues is doing something I feel is unethical. As women it is so hard for us to break the glass ceiling and our professional integrity is of the utmost importance. But, I said that to say I know that one of my colleagues is sleeping with a physician to advance her career.
I have heard others talk about her and there is a complete lack of respect for her. They are questioning her professional judgment and her medical knowledge. They are saying that the physician has pulled strings and altered policies and procedures for her. I and many other women have worked very hard to fulfill our dreams of becoming doctors.
I do not want to squash anyone’s dreams but patients put their lives in our hands and trust us to give them sound medical advice. So, my question is do I allow this behavior to go on or do I bring it up to the ethnics’ board at the hospital and medical school?

I am glad you enjoyed the segment with Tigger and our Hip Hop Docs,
But, to your question, please consider the source of the information about her relationship with this physician. Are they jealous or has something happened that could have placed a patient at risk?
I am one who believes in what you do in the dark will come to the light. If there is substantial evidence and she is placing patients at risk, By all means go and tell! You have taken an oath to do no harm. The woman is placing her personal/professional gain above the honor of the profession of medicine. Ask yourself, “Would you want this person to take care of one of your family members or even yourself?”
Let the school and hospital handle it.
